Our programme to strengthen child rights monitoring in Cabo Delgado, funded by UNICEF, concluded this month after running since January 2023. The programme trained local field focal points, set up community monitoring groups and ran focus group discussions, so that grave violations against children could be reported safely, verified and referred to services. We are publishing counts only. The detail of cases stays inside the child protection system.

The need was plain. Reporting channels were few, distant and mostly unknown to the people who needed them, and where cases were reported there was little follow-up. Families often did not know where to go, or feared what would happen if they did.

Across 2023 and 2024 we held 257 focus group discussions with 2,634 participants in 11 districts. We trained 40 field focal points, 28 in 2023 and 12 in 2024, and three community monitoring groups were established in 2024.

We thank UNICEF for the funding, and the communities across the 11 districts who gave their time to the discussions.
