Muxara's New Public Space Officially Inaugurated

The new public space ALPS has been building in the Muxara neighbourhood of Pemba is complete. On 21 September 2026 it was officially inaugurated and handed over, unveiled by the President of the Municipal Council of the City of Pemba, H.E. Satar Abdulgani, with residents, young people and partners filling the court and grandstand for a day of speeches, sport and celebration.

Muxara is one of the neighbourhoods on the edge of Pemba that has grown as families displaced by the conflict in northern Cabo Delgado have settled in and around the city, alongside long-standing host residents. Neighbourhoods like these often have very few safe, shared spaces where young people can gather and play.

One site, many uses

The finished space brings several uses onto a single site: a reinforced-concrete multi-use court marked for football and basketball, a covered and tiered grandstand, a covered community stage with accessible ramps, solar lighting so the space can be used into the evening, paved walkways, and a perimeter wall.

ALPS Resilience delivered the project with IOM, working closely with the Municipal Council of the City of Pemba, which supported the project throughout and now takes the completed space into public stewardship, and with the local leadership of the Bairro de Muxara, who helped guide the project on behalf of residents. As on ALPS's other projects, the space was built using labour drawn from the neighbourhood itself.

For Muxara, the new space is more than a court. It gives children and young people somewhere safe to play, gives women and girls a well-lit, accessible place to gather, and gives the wider community a venue for events and everyday life, bringing displaced and host families together on shared, neutral ground.
