More than water: our work across Cabo Delgado

Water is where recovery often begins, but it has never been the whole of what ALPS Resilience does. Across Cabo Delgado, and through years that rarely made it onto this website, our teams have built and rebuilt the everyday places communities depend on.

This year, working with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), that has meant a new community centre in Mocimboa da Praia and, in Muxara, a public space with an all weather sports field, its concrete court completed this month: a football and basketball court, a spectator tribune, and a shaded place for neighbours to meet. These are the places a displaced town becomes a community again.

The work runs back a long way. In the years after the 2021 attacks, ALPS helped bring Palma's public institutions back into service, among them the district police command and the district education offices, both rebuilt from serious damage, and a public building in Quissanga that was later damaged again as the conflict returned. Alongside that, the water programme grew phase by phase into the network that now reaches more than 100,000 people.

None of this happened all at once, and none of it happened only recently. It is a continuous record: wherever a fragile place needs building, and rebuilding, that is the work ALPS does.
